Discussion Questions

  1. How is Junior’s life on the reservation similar or different than what you had expected of a young Native American?
  2. Why does the author title his book the diary of a “part-time” Indian?
  3. What importance does the illustrators drawings have to the text? Do they add to the text or distract and why? Do they reflect more about the character than his writing?
  4. If you had to make a decision like Junior what would you have done and why?
  5. Why do you think Juniors parents stated "Whites have the most hope?" Why is it so important to have hope?
