The story follows Junior or Arnold Spirit a young Indian kid from a reservation in Spokane, Washington. Junior as he is known on the rez is a bright kid with no hope of a future. He is born without hope due to some medical problems and as he continues to grow he realizes there is no hope at all on a reservation. He is determined to rise above and asks to be transferred to a public white school in small farming town miles off the reservation. He goes through life fighting, defending, excusing, and loving. The book chronicles his adventures through out a school year and the diversity not just between him and his new school mates, but also the separation between him and his own people. He discovers life lessons and triumphs over every obstacle in his path.

Sherman's writing and Ellen's art are both witty, quirky, cynical, and comical at the same time. He writes from the point of view of the character. Through the description of the setting and voice of the Protagonist the reader feels for this character. The tone of the book is funny yet incredibly sad at the same time. The themes developed through the text deal with Hope, Diversity, and Isolation.
